Order of preference section under contact info

What does the order of preference section under contact info drive?
There's a section in the ESS contact info page called 'order of preference' where you can put your preference of contact i.e. email, slack, twitter.
What does this drive or is this for information purposes only? Does it drive notifications in the system? Does it appear in the directory to other employees anywhere?
