Why do I need to be active in a PDH tab in order to close it?

I would like to be about to close a tab by using the 'x' without having to be active in that tab. If I select the 'x' and there are no unsaved updates then the tab should simply close. If I select the 'x' and there are unsaved updates then a warning message should be displayed indicating that the unsaved updates will be ignored.
