Is it possible to modify the filter chips and adda seeded search for person related skills ?

Is it possible to create application extension that will change the filter chips in Connections (Smart filter and search page) ?

Hi all,

have a requirement to extend the Filter Chips for the person search in Connections Application with some additional seeded searches based on stored skill data for the persons.

The customer would like to search for people having added skills to the following area:

Has anyone already implemented something similar or can give me hints if and how this can be realized as an application extension for standard connection application.
