Expiry and Renewal of Course Completions

Please share your experience / best practices with 'Expiry and Renewal' for course completions in your Learning Cloud implementations.
I am considering the below options for my Client. Would appreciate if you could share insights / thoughts.
Options for Expiry and Renewal:
1. Define expiry and renewal rules on Course -> Create 'Required' Learning Initiatives on Course to enforce expiry and renewal rules
2. DO NOT define expiry and renewal rules for Course, especially for those courses where content is revised periodically (every year, every 2 years, etc.)
i. Create a new Course and Offering (for example, 2022 version, 2023 version, etc.)
ii. Stop initiative for existing offering when the new course is created
