New Hire in MSS and Preffered Name Search

1) Can you help with understanding how long does it take for manager to be able to see the employee in MSS after Hire? Should they wait for any process to be completed before they can see the new hire in their direct reports list?

2)Is there a way to search using Preferred name search instead of Person First Name, Last Name or Person Number, if yes please explain about the configuration change
