How can I enable person search by department name in HCM directory?

Want to know if there is any way to enable person search by deparment name in HCM directory.

HCM experience design studio Search Configuration's Worker LOV does not support department by default. Is it possible to add department so we can search person by department in Directory without directing to the advanced search screen? The client's CEO wants to search person by department complaining that navigating to advanced search each time is too time consuming and not efficient. Using Connections cannot be an option.
As an implementor I am also wondering if the search engines for Connections and Directory person search are different.
