Setting fields as mandatory

hi.

I would like to turn certain fields on "manage employment" and "manage person" into mandatory ones.
I have understood that it's done through manage customisations on the page the fields are in, however when I click, for example, on FTE field and then on Edit, I don't have "Required" checkbox. All I have is "Show Required" that adds a * to the field but no real value validation. I'm on release 13.

I have attached a screenshot.
Thanks for all the helpers!
