Joining Subledger data with GL data

I need to build a query which joins subledger data table, xla_ae_lines to gl_je_lines. I am attempting this through gl_sl_link_id but the performance is awful, is there a prescriptive way to accomplish this or possibly should i use different tables. My end goal is to get to the Journal source.
