What could cause partial refresh of the totals (in SmartView)?

I (and our users) have noticed that sometimes when we use SmartView to access our PBCS, we get one set of #s, and we know they are incorrect. If we refresh our SmartView a few times, the #s do show up as the correct value. What could be causing this?

Are we somehow are seeing intermediate numbers as a result of either our data copy rules or our data map pushes (from submit to report cube)?

Or maybe this has to do with some incorrect data storage types as well? Some of our parents are "Never Share" though they have multiple children. (Is it safe to change them to "Dynamic Calculation"? I am never sure what can lead to data corruption...
