How to Automatically Assign GTIN for items

We had come across GTIN whitepaper https://community.oracle.com/customerconnect/discussion/683626/gtin-relationships. however, it jus gives some business usecases for using GTIN and no details on steps to configure automatic GTIN assignation to items.
