Difference between a Kit and Standard item

What is the difference in terms of attributes for a kit item versus a standard item (purchased). We have defined a PTO model which contains Standard items underneath it but it is failing in OM during scheduling. When we queried the reason for the same, Oracle mentions one of the possible cause could be that a kit item has been defined as a standard item, hence, we wanted to understand the difference between the two item types.
