Does adding cell comments on multiple cells work only on a single column at a time in Smart View?

The Smart View feature of adding cell comments on a range of cells works only if the range lies in the same column. Is this an expected behavior. Also, deleting cell comments does not support selecting range of cells just like adding a new comment. Is this also an expected behavior?
