Do Group By alerts to Managers work? Manager - Direct Reports with Overdue Learning

Hi,
Did anyone have any luck with enabling Alert to Managers to work as expected? For us, it displays data with token names etc.
I have a very hard time making any Group By template work nicely, any advice?
