Is it possible to override the Process Learning Alerts to send an alert on a case by case basis?

Summary:

We would like to be able to send a New Learning Assignment alert as needed to employees as we get closer to the class rather than wait for the Process Learning Alerts process to run in the background.

We currently have this process set to run every 4 hours, but on occasion we need to be able to send this alert sooner.
