Checking Period Status before modifying - ARCS

Summary:

Is there a way to check the status of a period (Open/Closed/Locked) prior to changing it?

Content (required):

We run a bash script using EPM Automate commands. We want to check the status of the period before we change it. I know there is a setPeriodStatus command but nothing to get the status. Anyone else deal with this issue?
