is there a way to autopopulate preferred name with first name?

We are trying to improve the employee experience when they are adding emergency contacts. They are asked to provide the first and last names and also the preferred first and last names for their contacts. Is there a way we can auto populate the preferred names with what they have typed in the first and last name fields?
