kit item in purchasing side

Hi

We want to use kit item functionality on purchasing side. Basically we want to place order for kit/parent item but receiving will be for child/component items. Is this possible. Kit items works this way in Order Management but does that also work on Purchase ? If not, is there any workaround ?
