How to get OJ Text Area to preserve new lines when the user enters text

Summary:

As part of a customer contact message - the user fills out a text area and this is sent to an email provider API (simply, someone fills in a oj-textarea and then presses a button, the text area is stored as a variable and sent to a REST).

The issue is that the oj-textarea does not preserve/ retain any new lines, so the email is just one block of text rather than a formatted text with break points...

Same occurs when testing this issue with a fire notification.
