One item into multiple packing units

Summary:

We are implementing at a high tech customer that manufactures large testing tools. Due to the size of the tool one tool is shipped in multiple boxes/packing units. The sales order line is for the tool item but they want the information about the multiple boxes to reflect on the shipping documents.

I have reviewed the packing unit functionality but that seems to mainly cater for the use case of having multiples packed into one packing unit , not a single item packed into multiple packing units/boxes.

Any suggestions how we can support the use case of shipping a single item but in multiple boxes?
