Oracle CPQ: ABO Implementation

Summary: We are looking to enable ABO feature on our CPQ implementation. Everything is now installed/enabled.

I was just wondering if CPQ ABO is capable of handling this scenario. All our asset data is stored in downstream application. But modify order will be from CPQ? Is possible to fetch via integration then map in real-time? or it is a must to store the asset data in CPQ for ABO to work?
