Is it possible to have the alert for New Learning Assignment, sent based on the assignment date instead of the created date?

We have a scenario where we will be assigning a future date for an initiative. Example: I created the initiative on Jan 28 with an Assignment date of Jan 30. I was thinking that I would have received the notification on Jan 31, the day after the assignment date (since we have the alert scheduled to be sent once a day). But I actually received the notifications on Jan 29.
