No of Labels per Row functionality

What is the exact functionality of "No of Labels per Row" in Label Template.

Use Case and Business Need (Required):

In my current Label looks like two column. If my inventory serial controlled then is it possible to print the Serial number1 in first column , Serial number 2 in Second Column .

Each row having two labels. Column 1 and 2 separate Labels, So the "No of Labels per Row" , it will be helpful me.
