Smartlist Create from Members IDs Changed

Have a smartlist generated from members (@CHILDREN("product")). Over the weekend, when nothing happened in the system, the index values apparently changed, as the ad hoc retrieval is now showing index numbers instead of the labels. Anyone have an idea why they would change spontaneously and how to prevent that?
