Can we add a feature to an unsupported version of Service cloud

 I am on an old version of the Service cloud (Aug 2014), which is now out of support.   We are not scheduled to upgrade this for a while (4-6 months), due to environmental issues and resources.

In the meantime, we would like to add the Engagement Engine.  Does anyone know if we can add a feature to our current unsupported version, or would we need to make sure we were on a supported version first?  Has anyone been able to do this?
