Is defaulting to Edit mode in Manage Suppliers standard?

Summary:

When our users who have access to create and manage supplier data open a supplier in Manage Suppliers page, it is automatically in Edit mode. Is this standard? Is there a way to default to Read mode and have the user click an Edit button to edit the supplier data?
