How can the substitute items reflect in previously created PO's for receiving

Summary:

I have created substitute items in Item relationship in Item master, but if i create a new PO i am able to receive the substitute item.

How can this work for earlier created PO? i checked and it is not letting me replace the PO receiving with an alternate part number.
