Bypass and do an API update for an attribute that is configured as hidden for a specific step

Summary:

"Cancelreason_t" is a transaction attribute.
It is configured as "Hide" under Attribute > Document views for the particular step in which transaction is currently in.

Business would like to do an API update on transaction for cancel reason. This is part of a data clean up process


Since cancelReason_t is configured as hidden for all participant profiles (including admin), for the step "AlternateversionOrdered", when i do an API update, the response comes back as "The current Participant Profile does not provide read/write permission for attribute cancelReason_t."
Is there a way i can bypass and do an API update for an attribute that is configured as hidden for a specific step ?
