Milestone "In progress" Status

With the new Milestones functionality, released with version 24B in PPM (Project), when milestones are added from the Project Financial Plan section, you can complete the milestone. When you click on the “Complete Milestone” tab a new screen appears where you can select a value from a drop-down menu. What does the “In progress” value allow me to do? What differences are there with other states?
