Approval stages - Preapproval, Header and Post approval stages Differences

I have gone through few videos and documentation as well but i could not clearly understand the differences between Preapproval, Header and Post approval stages in approval workflow.

Please let me know the distinction between each of them and when do we need to use each of them.
