How can we update the "carrier" when order is not in created status?

Summary:

We are unable to update the carrier after order goes to status other than created ,tried via input interface but we are getting error.

This is required for large number so can't be done manually from order header

We required this because carrier is communicated at later stage.

Either REST API or workaround option would be appreciated.
