24C | Inline Edit and Mass Update for Pseudo Fields | Does it work only for newly created WB?

Does this functionality work only on newly created Workbenches?

In an existing Workbench, when a 1) mass update or 2) an inline edit is performed on a refnum field, it throws this error

 Cannot insert the record. A required column has not been set.

Newly created workbenches do not seem to have this problem.
