Can we configure an item like we do in the Sales Order but from PIM?

Summary:

Is it possible to configure an item within the Product Information Management/Product Hub, similar to how items are configured in a sales order with the configure-to-order process? We have a requirement that, when a user wants to create a new device, they should be able to select the device model and then add or choose the specifications. If the specified configuration already exists, the system should indicate this. If not, a new item code should be automatically generated for the newly configured item.
