Has anyone implemented work structures using a combination of standalone jobs and positions?

Summary: Our customer wants to know the drawbacks of using standalone jobs in one area of the business together with positions for another area of the business. Has anyone implemented this sort of hybrid work structure model? This is not something we have seen customers use in the past and want to know if anyone else has tried this and what the outcome was.
