How does the learning catalog search work? Best practices?

Summary:

When using a course code in the "Search for learning" search box, the actual course this course code belongs to is the very last one in the screenshot below. I would expect it to be the first and possibly other options to follow it.

From what I have been able to figure out is Oracle uses the first "3 characters" when returning results and returns results for all courses containing those characters in the title and course descriptions. Is there a way to narrow the results when using the search for learning, other than the filters or sort by? Are there wild cards; e.g. % signs at the start and/or end of the word(s)?
