Preferred name is used for ESS directory search, but HR want to search by Legal name

Our customer wants to use preferred name in directory search for ESS but legal name (First name, Last Name) as HR Professional. Since display name is configured using preferred name, HR is not able to search using legal name.

Can we have both preferred name and legal name as a search option? Is there any way around for this.
