Max Effective Date Record on a Combined Subject Area Report Or Null Value

Summary:

We are trying to bring back one row for Performance Task Completion Date, either the Null row or the latest completion date.
Using "- Performance Task Status Details"."Step Completion Date" = MAX("- Performance Task Status Details"."Step Completion Date" BY "- Performance Task"."Performance Task") filter errors out when we are using Document Status Real Time and Task Status Real Time subject areas and only brings back rows with dates if using one subject area. Other MAX formulas have all errored out. Any suggestions?
