Inactive user still has roles

During a role audit a user account was discovered to have a custom role assignment. Searching the username via the security console does not find anything with that username. What might cause the security console to not find a user which shows to have an active role assignment?

I have tried changing the search criteria from username, email, first/last names as well with no results tied to that username.
