How to route Project Status BPM approval workflow to an email id or distribution list

There is a requirement to route Project Status BPM approval workflow to the users belonging to a specific distribution list. We are looking to avoid the maintenance that comes with routing the approvals to the Approval groups. Is there a way to route Project Status BPM approval workflow to a specific distribution list?
