How to add hours worked on a day when there is an absence?

Summary:

We have a scenario where the employee can be on a long-term leave but can pick up casual shifts. The timecard does not allow the employee to put hours on the time card on the same day that there is a leave. The only way it allows them is when "override daily duration" is enabled and we cannot have this enabled due to other downstream impacts. Is there any other way to add hours on the time card without enabling "override daily duration"?
