use formula is disabled for line level text attribute

Summary:

I have created a text attribute in line line level grid and want to populate the attribute using function. but it is not working .that means the values are not populated. When i tried to use formulas, the option itself disabled. neither function or formula can be used.

i need with sample steps/ code to populate the text attribute in line grid by using both function and formula.
