How to use Future segment for Project?

Hello,

Our Client's Management is debating on utilizing the Future GL String.

1. Would we be able to change the Future Category to be called something else?
2. How to check if future currently enabled or disabled? If we wanted to start posting to it would we have to set up “future” numbers to select from? Or can we just make our own future codes that we post to? Management is thinking of utilizing this for Project Codes to track different R&D Projects.
