<oj-sp-smart-search>: how to keep applied filters or set default filters?

I’m using <oj-sp-smart-search> and I’m wondering if there’s a way to keep filters applied on a page or set default filters. I’ve tried setting the filterCriterion as persistent in the session or using an application-level variable instead of a page-level variable, but I’m not getting the desired behavior.

When I navigate to another page and navigate back to the search page, the filter in the search box disappears, or the filter variable stays, but the table remains filtered and the search box is empty. In this case, the user can't see that a filter is applied and can’t modify or remove it.
