Consolidating Existing Expenditure Categories - 33 to 10

Summary:

Current client wishes to consolidate their existing expenditure categories from approximately 33 into just 10. From what I understand from documentation and hands-on experience the expenditure category cannot be adjusted on existing expenditure types. I want to understand how Oracle recommends going about such change. Is there a way to do this change by maintaining current expenditure types and updating expenditure category without end-dating/recreating. The reason for asking is due to the amount of open POs/Invoices/reqs that would be affected with a current exp type being end dated.
