Is DEFAULT_ERP_BUCKET_FOR_INBOUND_INVENTORY mandatory?

We have this and the equivalent one for outbound setup since day one, but we are wondering if we clear this field to blank if there are any negative effects. It seems like it would reduce the number of transactions sent to ERP, which is a positive, but we're wondering how everyone uses this parameter. Documentation claims it's not mandatory, but we don't know why it was setup for us.
