Depreciate BOM Items

We have a requirement to implement depreciation for items in the BOM tables

Currently, the BOM tables include EffectiveTo and EffectiveFrom columns; however, updating these values causes items already configured in a quote to be removed during reconfiguration. Our goal is to ensure that items previously added to the BOM/LIG in commerce are not depreciated when reconfiguring. Is there a standard way to achieve this?

The help document mentions the option to set the "Line BOM Effective Date." Since this is a system attribute that gets populated during configuration or reconfiguration, we have not been able to set its value. Is it possible to do so, and would this be the correct approach?
