Item number update in PROD for existing item having transactions

Is it advisable to update item number of existing item already in use in PROD?

Customer has existing item codes which are already being used in transactions. Customer want to update existing item number to another item number.

Currently item number field is disabled by default. However i am aware that by changing profile option "EGP_UPDATEABLE_ITEM" to Yes, it will allow to update the item code as its generated user-defined. However if we update the item code, is there any impact on downstream modules like inventory, purchasing, costing, mfg where item has been used in many historic and current transaction? Will the updated item code will be replaced seamlessly in all historic and current data/transactions?
