How is release amount calculate for BPA?

I need to understand the calculation logic for the BPA "release amount" field when I create a release (PO). I've noticed that this field is updated when the release (PO) is in open status. I expected the release amount field to also be updated when the PO's status is "Pending Supplier Acknowledgment". What is the correct calculation logic?
