Substitute Items vs Alternate Components in BOM – Planning and Work Order Behavior

Hi everyone,

In Oracle Fusion SCM, we identified two different substitution concepts:

  1. Substitute Items defined at item level (PIM – Item Relationships), including the Planning Enabled checkbox
  2. Alternate Components defined directly in the Bill of Material

We would like to clarify the following:

1. Planning perspective

  • Which type of substitution is actually considered by Supply Planning?
  • Is it correct that only Substitute Items at item level (with Planning Enabled) are used by planning, while Alternate Components in the BOM are ignored by planning?

2. Execution / Work Order perspective

When a Work Order is created and the primary component has no on-hand stock but a valid substitute exists with available stock:

Howdy, Stranger!
