Defaulting the seniority date to Enterprise service date

Hi ,
We have a requirement to default the seniority date to the Original enterprise service date (first time hire into organization). We are in V3. We are trying to achieve this using a fast formula, but not much successful.
With Cumulative option set to N, we see the 'Calculate Seniority Dates' process is splitting the dates whenever a back dated assignment change
(Job , Location etc., ) occurs. The split is taking the new hire date as the latest seniority date.
- Can we in anyway stop the process to split the seniority record whenever any assignment level change happens?
- To achieve this, is it better to have Cumulative set to N ?
