I am not able to use an expression in the Label Designer to concatenate 2 fields into 1 QR code

Summary:

I am using the Label Designer in Oracle WMS Cloud attempting to create a multi-field QR code. The expression I have entered is: $item.barcode$|$inventory.batch_number$

When I click "Save" at the bottom, I get the following error message: "You must fill in a value for column name, function, expression, value, or page number"
